Most of you may not know, but in addition to the collages that I make while travelling, I am also a quilter. Super nerdy right? Quilting allows me to exercise my brain in ways that I used to as a painter and a clothing designer, both of which I have little to no time for currently. I have a great appreciation for textiles of all kinds, and I love to create extreme juxtapositions of color and contrast, new and vintage, Eastern and Western. The aquisition of fabric is almost as fun and challenging as using it. I have an Aunt who collects and uses vintage Japanese kimono fabric in her own work who gives me her leftovers, I am always looking at vintage stores for interesting pieces to re-purpose, and I have been going to the NW Sew Expo and the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show for the past couple of years for inspiration and to source vendors. More recently, within the last 6 months, I have started ordering on Ebay. I used to think this was cheating because I liked to randomly come across interesting things without neccessarily seeking them out, but I have found that it is very hard to communicate a completely accurate description of a fabric in a photograph, so the element of surprise is still very much part of the Ebay purchasing process. When I started quilting in high school, I approached it with a very Punk Rock attitude, like putting Mylar, faux fur and plastics in the mix, and not following or allowing any sort of pattern or order, because Duh, that's lame, right? But the longer I have been quilting, the more I appreciate doing the prep-work, using the proper tools and basically not sabotaging myself (and my machines!) by using difficult materials. Here are some pics of a couple of projects that I'm working on!
